Kelly-lee Hickey’s Thicker than Water was the winner of the 2011 PressPress Chapbook Award. It is a subtle evocation of a time, place and person; intimate in tone, restrained in diction.
Kelly-lee says of her work: “I’ve always capitalised on intimacy. I breathe through my work. I’ve performed on hundreds of stages, shielded only by a microphone that serves as a thin veil between myself and the character that is me. I perform intensely personal work in public spaces because I cherish the subtleties that can be gleaned from telling the only truth I can be sure of.” [from her site, at www.kellyleehickey.com]
Multi-award winning poet and performer, Kelly-lee Hickey, explores the intersections between identity, location and history through stark poetics and startling performance. She has toured her writing throughout Australia and Asia, including appearances at the Ubud Readers and Writers Festival, Sydney Writers Festival and the Bookworm Festival (China).
Hickey is the national winner of the 2010 Australian Poetry Slam, and the 2011 PressPress Award, and has been shortlisted for the Red Earth Poetry Award. Her poetry has been published in Australia, China and New Zealand, and translated into Indonesian. Thicker than Water is her first collection of poetry.

jesus was wrong
we are not bread and wine
we are whiskey
and places to sleep
we are hangovers
drunk with ego
throwing punches
