MANUSCRIPT ASSESSMENT SERVICE

A manuscript assessment service has been set up for those who want to have constructive feedback about their manuscript.

Who are the assessors?

Assessors are award-winning Australian poets and fiction writers and/or editors who understand the technical and creative demands of poetry or fiction. Your assessor will be one who is knowledgeable in your genre.

Your manuscript will be submitted anonymously to them so that you know you are getting an unbiased opinion based on the quality of the work alone, not on your reputation or influence.

Will the assessor just flatter me?

The assessors will give you the benefit of their professional knowledge and experience. They will tell it as they see it. The assessor will remain anonymous.

What will the report look like?

The report will be in a standard format covering: technical aspects; structure; use of techniques; voice; marketability and other useful comments at the assessor's discretion.

It will not be edited or proofread but the comments will allow for the author to re-write, to edit for themselves, or to decide if they need the services of a professional editor.

What will I need to provide?

You should provide a copy of your manuscript (not the original) and, if possible, the manuscript in digital form. Your manuscript will be returned to you with the report.

How should the manuscript look?

The manuscript should look as if you are sending it to a publisher, that is: on A4 white paper; on one side of the paper; using a plain font; 1.5 (poetry) or double spaced (prose); unbound; a header with title and page number.

On a separate page give: your name; your address; the manuscript title; the genre (type of writing); the length in pages (poetry) or number of words (prose); a stamped, self-addressed envelope adequate for return of your manuscript.

Are all manuscripts accepted for assessment?

No. If there is no expert assessor available to assess your genre, your manuscript and payment will be returned to you.
